Edna St. Vincent Millay’s sonnet What lips my lips have kissed and wher

Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poem, â€Å"What lips my lips have kissed and where and why† Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poem, â€Å"What lips my lips have kissed and where and why,† is tied in with being, truly or intellectually bored, and recollecting the torrid love of one’s youth. The â€Å"ghosts† that frequent her are the numerous admirers of her past; she’s explicitly attempting to recall them all. She reviews the enthusiasm she encountered and how there was a sure inclination inside herself. Millay shows this through her clear symbolism, utilization of the downpour as an artistic gadget and by resembling herself with a forlorn tree.      The utilization of images establishes the pace of the piece. She embodies the downpour in, â€Å"But the downpour/Is brimming with apparitions today around evening time, that tap and moan/Upon the glass and tune in for reply.† She makes t...

Roscommon Rose essays

Roscommon Rose papers At the point when I was told Id be speaking to Dublin at the International Millennium Queen of Roscommon Contest I was so glad and charmed. A wide range of things were going through my mind. I was very anxious about gathering different young ladies and completely froze about remaining in front of an audience before many individuals as I had never done anything like this yet I was truly energized too. On the Wednesday before the challenge my mum and two sisters and I got readied to take off to Roscommon. We had been welcome to the Millennium meal which was being held in the Abbey Hotel. We remained in a stunning guesthouse and the woman there caused me to feel extremely significant by disclosing to me that she was so pleased to have a Rose remaining in her home. At the point when we showed up at the lodging at 8pm we were welcomed there by the Dublin part of the Roscommon Mens Association. The press Shown up and continued to take what appeared several photographs. After that I was drawn closer by a youthful stylishly bare man who talked with me for Boston TV what an encounter. I attempted to imagine this was an ordinary occurance, else I would have lost my nerve. The meal was extraordinary and we sat at a table brimming with dignitaries, every beautiful individuals including two clerics from Roscommon. We had an exquisite supper and afterward individuals from Committees from everywhere throughout the world were given different prizes. We were completely charmed that Michael and Attracta Fitzmaurice were remembered for this introduction as Michael is a trojan specialist and has committed a great deal of his extra time to the Association. I detected a portion of different Roses out yonder yet realized Id be presented appropriately the next day. On Thursday we ventured out from Roscommon town to Castlerea. I was apprehensive about gathering different young ladies as I didnt recognize what's in store by any stretch of the imagination. I showed up at Mrs. Morgans house (the house where all the Roses were stayi... <!

The Electromagnetic Spectrum

There are sure segments that improve the world around a home and wonderful for people. One of such segments is the light, which empowers us to see one another, and it guarantees an agreeable conjunction between people. It is inconceivable of living in a world without light; something like this would make endurance very hard.Advertising We will compose a custom research paper test on The Electromagnetic Spectrum explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More This report will investigate the different sorts of instruments used to show light, and how they separate light into different parts and how those segments might be utilized in various methods for making the human endurance on planet earth better. The primary instrument in the detachment of light, which require conversation, is the electromagnetic range. The innovation of this instrument generally has been incorporated into different gadgets implied a great deal in the investigation of light just as in space science. The e lectromagnetic range was first produced using a crystal, which isolated white lights into various lights that were of various hues. The various hues came about on the grounds that the normal light also called the white light made up various types of beams that movement at various frequency. Despite the fact that the electromagnetic range didn't show different frequencies in which the light photons went at, it isolated the light into different beams (Browning 39). The other instrument is the spectrometer that is one of the instruments utilized as often as possible in issues to do with partition of lights. It is outstanding that the characteristic light or the white light has different parts that are significant for individuals to know. These segments of light are the infrared, the ultra violet beams and gamma beams. These segments of light separated by their frequencies so as to recognize them. One of the devices utilized in the detachment of lights is the spectrometer and it isolate s the characteristic light into the various frequency contained in that (Browning 44). The spectrometer is accordingly an instrument that estimates light by mulling over its frequency. The spectrometer demonstrates the frequency of the specific beam. It contains an electromagnetic range, which isolates various sorts of beams contained in a given white light coordinated to the spectrometer to gauge the frequency of that ray.Advertising Looking for examine paper on characteristic sciences? The spectrometer demonstrated the length of the wave that is noticeable. This made it simpler for the wave arrangement on whether it was for the gamma beams, X beams, the infrared or the ultra violet beams (Browning 54). The other sort of gadget utilized in t he partition of lights is the spectroscope made utilizing crystals, which has various degrees of diffraction to diffract various kinds of beams on various frequencies. The cutting edge spectroscopes are changed with the coordinated innovation, that is various instruments put in one gadget to such an extent that one gadget can perform different capacities recently done by various types of instruments (Faust and Sternberg 67). The spectroscope along these lines is a mix of electromagnetic range, which is for diffracting various parts of light and a photograph finder to distinguish the light waves. Other than isolating light into different segments, the spectroscope recognizes the components from which the light originated from. Robert Bunsen and Gustav Robert set up this strategy by clarifying that when a specific component gets heat until it creates light is portrayed essentially of that component. This implies every component has its own nuclear segments that are not the same as tha t of different components. At the point when that component is warmed, it delivers light whose frequency and shading is not quite the same as that of different components (Jay 45). The other firmly related instrument is the spectrograph that record range of astronomic once it is gotten with the goal that investigation should be possible. This instrument was imagined in light of progression in the field of photography. The progression in photographic movies, to such an extent that the movies had impacts of different types of light, for example, the infrared, the X-beams, the ultra violet beams implied that different rushes of the lights could be caught and recorded on the film. The spectrograph subsequently is a gadget consolidating the coordinated innovation of the spectroscope and the photographic film for recording and recognizing different frequencies discharged by various components whose light the spectrograph can identify. The advanced spectrograph isolates the rush of a speci fic beam into recurrence frequencies that are noticeable. The ongoing spectrographs make it conceivable to see the identified beam on a PC in this way making it simpler to group the sort of light that the wave is from and the sort of component, which has delivered such sort of light. The account of these lights have additionally prompted the disclosure of paint colors just as new components not known previously (James 25).Advertising We will compose a custom research paper test on The Electromagnetic Spectrum explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More The other instrument is the pillar splitter, which is a gadget that parts characteristic light into two. It is a rectangular instrument with two crystals combined. The pillar splitter can likewise be made of a glass with one side secured with half silver. Contingent upon the sort of spreads utilized, the shaft splitter parts the light into various frequencies noticeable to the natural eye. Telescope is another gadget that i s pertinent to partition of lights, however its essential use is that of perception of remote articles or significant distance objects it utilizes the standard of division of lights to identify the space items to, for example, the stars. The telescope joins and isolates the beams produced by the item. It at that point centers around that specific beam and the way from which it has originated from. That implies that telescope can concentrate on one specific star without floundering or floating to another star (Palmer 88). The cutting edge telescopes are all around cutting edge with the end goal that they have inbuilt coordinated frameworks which break down the components and materials which are contained by the article which they are seeing. The cutting edge telescopes can be ordered into the optical telescope and the radio telescope. The optical telescope increment the rakish size of the item with the end goal that the article expands and more splendid in this manner making it progr essively obvious. The article when captured is clear and the photographs are put away for additional investigation (Palmer 72). Other than the field of space science, these focal point utilized in optical telescope have different uses, for example, in spyglasses and optics. The optical telescopes have a further order into different structures relying upon the sort of beam that they use. This implies there are x-beam telescopes, infrared telescopes, gamma beam telescope, and bright telescope. The x-beam telescopes are utilized to identify metal segments of the stars and different planets known to mankind. The bright distinguish different components however for the most part used to search for plant segments in different planets. The other type of telescope is the radio telescope. This sort of telescope doesn't manage light just however it identifies microwave radiations (Palmer 69). End The investigation of light has changed our reality more than anticipated. The fiber optic used to move information starting with one spot then onto the next uses light. The division of light can be credited to have contributed a great deal in this since common light alone with its possibilities can't benefit the increases achieved by different parts of light. As expressed before, however numerous scholars don't consider light as a fundamental requirement for human endurance it is as yet an essential need normally assumed. Nourishment, got from plants comes about due to photosynthesis made conceivable by the accessibility of bright beams, which begin from the sun. The partition of light has likewise prompted the revelation of components that stayed obscure until the beams demonstrated that there were such substances. Components, for example, lithium and uranium are a portion of the components whose presence came to be a direct result of different waves.Advertising Searching for inquire about paper on regular sciences? Before, just light from the sun-empowered individuals to see during the day. Be that as it may, numerous miracles of the universe, for example, the planets and stars have been obvious during the evenings because of the partition of lights. Light is significant in the fundamental endurance of the advanced man more than some other time ever. Works Cited Browning, John. Study And Analysis On Hedge Funds Finance Essay - Free Essay Example

Hedge funds can be distinguished from mutual funds by a number of key characteristic. Different financial instruments are used by hedge funds to reduce risk, increase returns and minimize the correlation with equity and bond markets. Compare to mutual funds, hedge funds normally have more flexible investment strategies and are more flexible in their investment options, such as using short selling and derivatives which include puts, calls and options etc, and can also decide to have a higher level of leverage. Many hedge funds can deliver returns which are not correlated to any market and aim to have absolute or positive targets that are not correlated to the development of the market while mutual funds aim to have relative return in the results of the fund compared with an index. The structure of fee in hedge funds and that in mutual funds are also different. Hedge fund managers usually invest their own money in their fund. Mutual funds only have a management fee which is a few per cent of managed capital while hedge funds normally have a fixed fee which is around two per cent of the managed capital and a variable fee which is around 20 per cent of any earnings lower and higher than the return target. When a variable fee is charged only if the value of funds is larger than its previous top value, some hedge funds would set a limit for when the variable fee may be levied. Most hedge funds are primarily intended to be managed by investment professionals who are experienced or financially strong individuals. One of the key characteristics of hedge funds is that it only allows investors to withdraw their money from the fund on a monthly or quarterly basis while mutual funds can provide liquidity on a daily basis. This can improve investments when there are less liquid assets. There are around 14 unique investment strategies of hedge fund and there are differences between them because all hedge funds are not the same. Many hedge funds protect their investments against losses and downturns in markets, but this does not apply to all of them. For example, some hedge fund strategies which are not related to equity markets can transfer similar returns with a very low risk of loss, while others may be as or more volatile than mutual funds. And the hedge fund strategies are also including selling short, using arbitrage, trading options or derivatives, investing in anticipation of a specific event and investing in deeply discounted securities etc. For example, short selling strategy means selling shares but not holding them and expecting to buy them back at a lower price in the future. Among the various hedge fund strategies, there are huge differences in investment returns, volatility, and risk. Reducing volatility and risk are the targets of most hedge funds when they are trying to keep capital and transfer absolute or positive returns under all market conditions. Strà ¶mqvist (2008) and ECB (2007) show that the hedge fund mark et has developed dramatically between 1996 and 2007. Around 2000 Hedge funds managed about USD 135 billion dollars in 1996 and the figures were increased to 10000 and USD 2000 billion in the end of 2007 (see Figure 1). In this period, not only hedge funds have grown in size, but also numbers of strategies used has changed. Hedge funds can affect financial markets positively or negatively and perform two functions on the financial markets. Firstly, liquidity in the financial market can be improved by hedge funds. When there is a higher liquidity in the financial market, pricing should be more effective. Compare to other investors, hedge funds would like to buy or sell more assets and they can invest in markets and instruments with less liquidity while mutual funds cannot. Moreover, hedge funds usually play an important role in new markets. Liquidity in the financial market can therefore be increased. Secondly, hedge fund can use arbitrage strategy to let managers achieve in mispri cing. Investors should purchase undervalued assets and then sell overvalued assets out, so that prices can be balanced and also can be shifted closely to fundamental values. As a result, the market can be more effective by improving pricing. However, there are also some negative effects occurred by hedge funds on financial market. It may occur higher risks due to the flexibility. For example, a higher level of leverage can produce larger profits, but risks can also be increased. If a wrong investment is applied, hedge fund will collapse. And also, the use of borrowing and of derivatives can have effects on financial market. There are several events happened in financial markets in the period 2007-2009. The financial crisis of 2007-2009 is caused by a liquidity shortfall in the United States banking system and it has resulted in the collapse of large financial institutions, the bail out of banks by national governments and downturns in stock markets around the world. For exampl es, Bear Sterns hedge funds collapsed in the beginning of 2007 and these funds had highly leveraged portfolios with credit instruments related to the US market for housing bonds; Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc which was a global financial-services firm declared bankruptcy in 2008; the Icelandic banking sector collapsed and hedge funds are accused of speculating against the currency and the economy in Iceland (Affà ¤rsvà ¤rlden, 31 March 2008) etc. The financial crisis 2007-2009 has affected hedge funds more than they have affected the crisis while there are still lack of evidences to show that the crisis is caused by hedge funds . Hedge funds had poorer returns due to the financial crisis. According to the changes in regulations to manage the financial market in 2008, hedge funds have been affected. The changes in regulations are about to prevent short selling which affected different hedge fund strategies. Short selling is one of the major strategies of hedge funds. When it was prevented in the falling market, hedge funds would not be able to sell shares and to buy them back at a lower price in the future. And also, it would be much harder to protect long positions through short positions and to use certain arbitrage strategies. Hedge funds then applied a short bias strategy to create back a higher positive return. In the financial crisis 2007-2009, future movements in values of assets cannot be foreseen easily because the volatility in shares and prices was very high. While the share prices increased and the commodity prices decreased suddenly, many hedge funds were experiencing problems. And also, the problems of banks have affected hedge funds which are in the form of more restrictive lending, higher borrowing costs and assets related to bankruptcies such as Lehman Brothers. The hedge funds were forced to sell assets in a falling market and this affected their returns negatively. Moreover, the financial crisis 2007-2009 has also affected various t ypes of assets. Hedge funds normally assume different types of risks including credit, duration and liquidity by receiving premiums which usually produce majority of the profits of hedge funds. In the crisis, the higher degree of risk taking did not lead to higher profits because different types of assets has been affected by the downturn and at the same time all the profits that gained from the premiums has been cancelled by the market. The losses made in the crisis could not be covered by the increased risk premiums. Sometimes, hedge funds may also have both positive and negative effects on the financial crisis. There are many benefits of Hedge funds. For examples, many hedge fund strategies can generate positive or absolute returns in both rising and falling equity and bond markets; in a balanced portfolio, hedge funds comprehension can lower overall risk and volatility of the portfolio and also increases returns; there are huge amount of hedge fund investment styles and many of them are nor correlated to each other, therefore, investors would have a wide range of hedge fund choices in order to meet their different investment purposes; it is proved by some researches that hedge funds usually have higher returns and lower risk comparing to other investment funds and also hedge funds create more stable long-term investment returns than any of the individual funds etc. There are also critiscisms of Hedge funds including Transparency, Systemic risk, Market capacity, U.S. investigations, Performance measurement and Value in mean/variance efficient portfolios etc. In conclusion, hedge funds had both positive and negative effects on financial markets but had been affected by the events in financial markets in the period 2007-2009. For examples, most types of asset and markets has been affected by the downturn and it has reduced the diversifications effect; hedge funds had been affected by the changes of regulation and hedge funds which are in the form of mor e restrictive lending, higher borrowing costs and assets related to bankruptcies such as Lehman Brothers have been affected by the problems of banks etc. Therefore, the performance of hedge funds became worse.

How to Use Dual Prepositions in German

Most German prepositions are always  followed by the same case, but dual prepositions (also called two-way or doubtful prepositions) are prepositions that can take either the accusative or dative case. What Are the Dual Prepositions in German? There are nine of these dual  prepositions: anaufhinternebeninà ¼beruntervorzwischen How to Decide Whether A Dual Preposition Is Dative or Accusative? When a dual preposition answers the question where to? (wohin?) or what about? (worà ¼ber?), it takes the accusative case. When answering the question where (wo?), it takes the dative case.   In other words, the accusative prepositions typically refer to an action or movement to another place, whereas the dative prepositions refer to something that is not changing location.   Think about the English phrases he jumps into the water versus he is swimming in the water. The first answers a where to question: Where is he jumping? Into the water. Or in German, in das Wasser  or  ins Wasser. He is changing location by moving from the land into the water. The second phrase represents a where situation. Where is he swimming? In the water. In German, in dem Wasser  or  im Wasser. He is swimming inside the body of water and not moving in and out of that one location.   To express the two different situations, English uses two different prepositions:  in  or  into. To express the same idea, German uses one preposition —  in  Ã¢â‚¬â€ followed by either the accusative case (motion) or the dative (location). More About Using the Accusative Case If you want to convey a direction or destination in a sentence, youll need to use the accusative. These sentences will always answer the question where  to/wohin? For example: Die Katze springt auf den Stuhl. |  The cat jumps on(to) the chair.Wohin springt die Katze? Auf den Stuhl. | Where is the cat jumping? On(to) the chair. The accusative case is also used when you can ask what about/worà ¼ber? For example: Sie diskutieren à ¼ber den Film. |  They are discussing  the film.Worà ¼ber diskutieren sie? ÃÅ"ber den Film. | What are they talking about? About the film. More About Using the Dative Case The dative case is used to indicate a stable position or situation. It answers the question where/wo?  For example: Die Katze sitzt auf dem Stuhl. (The cat sits on the chair.) The dative is also used when there is no particular direction or goal intended.  For example: Sie ist die ganze Zeit in der Stadt herumgefahren.|  (She drove around town all day.) Remember that the above rules apply only to dual prepositions. Dative-only prepositions will always remain dative, even if the sentence indicates motion or direction.  Likewise, accusative-only prepositions will always remain accusative, even if no motion is described in the sentence.   Clever Ways to Remember  German Prepositions Arrow verses Blob Some find it easier to remember the accusative-versus-dative rule by thinking of the accusative  letter  A  on its side, representing an arrow ( ) for motion in a specific direction, and the dative letter D  on its side to represent a blob at rest. Of course, how you remember the difference matters little, as long as you have a clear understanding of when a two-way preposition uses the dative or accusative.   Rhyme Time --  Use the following rhyme to help  memorize dual-prepositions): An, auf, hinter, neben, in, à ¼ber, unter, vor und zwischenstehen mit dem vierten Fall, wenn man fragen kann â€Å"wohin,†mit dem dritten steh’n sie so,daß man nur fragen kann â€Å"wo.† Translated: At, on, behind, near, in, over, under, before and between Go with the fourth case, when one asks where to The third case is different: With that, you can only ask where. Dual Prepositions and Sample Sentences The following chart lists an example of the dative and accusative cases for several dual prepositions. Preposition Definition Dative Example Accusative Example an at, by, on Der Lehrer steht an der Tafel. The teacher is standing at the blackboard. Der Student schreibt es an die Tafel. The student writes it on the board. auf on, onto Sie sitzt auf dem Stuhl. She is sitting on the chair. Er legt das Papier auf den Tisch. He is putting the paper on the table. hinter behind Das Kind steht hinter dem Baum. The child is standing behind the tree. Die Maus là ¤uft hinter die Tà ¼r.The mouse runs behind the door. neben beside, near, next to Ich stehe neben der Wand. I stand next to the wall. Ich setzte mich neben ihn. I sat down next to him. in in, into, to Die Socken sind in der Schublade. The socks are in the drawer. Der Junge geht in die Schule. The boy goes to school. à ¼ber over (above), about, across Das Bild hà ¤ngt à ¼ber dem Schreibtisch. The picture hangs over the desk. Ãâ€"ffne den Regenschirm à ¼ber meinen Kopf. Open the umbrella over my head. unter under, below Die Frau schlà ¤ft unter den Bà ¤umen. The woman is sleeping under the trees. Der Hund là ¤uft unter die Brà ¼cke. The dog runs under the bridge. zwischen between Der Katze stand zwischen mir und dem Stuhl. The cat is between me and the chair. Sie stellte die Katze zwischen mich und den Tisch. She put the cat between me and the table. Test Yourself Answer this question: Is  in der Kirche  dative or accusative? Wo  or  wohin?   If you think that  in der Kirche  is dative and the phrase answers the question  wo?  then you are correct.  In der Kirche  means in (inside) the church, while  in die Kirche  means into the church (wohin?). Now you see yet another reason why you need to know your German genders. Knowing that church is  die Kirche, which changes to  der Kirche  in the dative case, is an essential element in using any preposition, but especially the two-way ones. Now well put the  Kirche  phrases into sentences to further illustrate the point: Akkusativ:  Die Leute gehen in die Kirche.  The people are going into the church.  Dativ:  Die Leute sitzen in der Kirche.  The people are sitting in the church.

The Ethics Of Dissent Managing Guerrilla Government

Georgia Southern University Book Review : The Ethics of Dissent Managing Guerrilla Government Yamini Gollapudi 3/2/2015 In its Ethics of Dissent- Managing Guerrilla Government, Rosemary O’Leary provides a sobering description on bureaucratic sabotage in federal government through stories of dissenting public officials named as â€Å"guerrillas† or â€Å"administrative guerrillas†. Guerrillas are the one who engage in irregular warfare as a member of an independent unit and they are the one who are willing to see the change in the public organizations (pg. 4). Dissatisfaction from the actions of public institutions makes the guerrillas to work against the wishes of superiors or organizational norms either implicitly or explicitly and to make a push back against the management to do what they believe is the right thing which can be termed as â€Å"guerrilla government† (p. xi). According to O’Leary majority of the guerrilla governments occur because of the inevitable tension between bureaucracy and democracy that will never go away and they are undetectable because of uninvolving world of bureaucracy (pg. 3, 8). This tension in turn create ethical and management challenges including the harsh realities which all the public servants must learn to steer. To explain these tensions O’Leary uses three lenses: Bureaucratic politics, Organizations and Management and Ethics with the help of three in-depth case studies and 21 mini cases. Managing Organizations Organization Structure

Question: Discuss about the Managing Organizations for Organization Structure. Answer: Introduction: At the beginning of my career, I used to work in a small organization with employee strength less than twenty. I was appointed there as an operational supervisor. Therefore, I have to analyze the effectiveness of the operational process of the organization. At the time of joining, I was not that confident in managing the responsibilities appropriately. Despite that, I have tried to control my anxiety and take the responsibility as a challenge that can help me to grow up in my professional career. After joining, my manager have described my responsibility is to oversee that every employees is performing their responsibility in an appropriate way. I have provided with the information that the company has specialized person for specific responsibility of the organization. However, after few days of work, I found that the organization is having shortage of employees. As a result, every employee in the organization has to take on several responsibilities simultaneously. I found that employees are being forced to handle responsibilities in which they are not specialized. As a result, it is creating huge amount of stress for the employees, which eventually affecting the operational process of the organization. Furthermore, I found that increase amount of pressure has affected the satisfaction level of the employees largely. Therefore, the company has experienced high rate of employee turnover. I immediately address the situation to the higher management. However, the management has refused my suggestion of recruiting more people in order to provide specialized task to each employee. For the time being, I was surprised that management does not showing too much concern over the issue. However, later I realized that recruiting more people would increase the cost of the organization largely. Furthermore, management also has to develop new operational process that will increase the difficulty level for the organization. Thus, it actually creating dilemma for the organization to handle. Learning from experience: I have identified few benefits in using the Katz and Mintzbergs theories to elaborate the incident that I have faced in this situation. The above mentioned incident highlighted the large number of dilemmas that management of organizations have to face in order to implement effective operational process. The Katz and Mintzbergs theories highlighted that managers responsibilities can be elaborate in term of different roles or organized set of behavior identified with a particular position (Shafritz, Ott and Jang 2015). Interpersonal responsibility of the managers refers to the duties that involved people who are subordinates of the organization (Anwar 2015). I found that my incident also require managers to consider interpersonal responsibilities in a much more effective way (VĂRZARU and VĂRZARU 2013). Although, I am not sure how managers could able to manage this situation effectively but it will certainly give clear idea about the raised situation. Since, the me ntioned situation has induced managers to utilize all the employee strength to fulfill the organizational requirements (Randerson and Fayolle 2013). Therefore, it is necessary for the managers to develop effective interpersonal skill so that all the employees can feel themselves as a valuable asset of the organization. I believe that the theory describes that the managers have to be decent in order to handle the critical situation in an effective way. For instance, managers have to develop certain organizational atmosphere that will allow employees to contribute for the organizational effectiveness (Tam and Gray 2016). Thus, I believe that the theory highlighted that managers have to implement their informational responsibilities so that the employees can able to understand the situation of the organization in an effective manner. I felt that the proper flow of information could help the employees to take several responsibilities of the organizational apart from their specialization as well. Hence, proper flow of information is crucial for the successful utilization of the operational process (Horkin, Mevorach and Katz 2015). However, managers of Katz elaborate them seems to me to absence an overt moral compass (Evans 2013). Thus, it induces managers to implement strategies that are right for the b usinesses. Hence, managers decision of not recruiting additional employees to fulfill organizational responsibilities is somewhat justified by the theories. Mintzbergs integrated model of management highlighted the role of managers perspective in effecting their approach to the management (Katz-Buonincontro and Ghosh 2014). Thus, this theory also highlighted that managers perspective is very important in managing organizational incidents like those that the one above mentioned. Learning about myself: The incident highlighted the fact that I have lack of knowledge regarding the management implication in handling several complex operational processes. For instance, I am still not sure about the effectiveness of utilize non-specialize people in specialized field. However, the experience of this incident has helped me different way of running a business. Therefore, I believe the experience of this incident has helped me to enrich my knowledge regarding the management implication in the organizational workplace. The experience of this incident has helped me to deal with the future complex organizational situation in an effective way. Furthermore, the incident also helped me to understand moral perspective of the managers in a better way. This I believe will help me in future to take challenging decision for the benefit of the organization in a much more effective way. I also found that it is important to consider condition and perspectives of the employees. However, it is necessary to have certain level of balance between employees benefit and organizational profit as well. The mentioned incident also enriches my other learning. I found that effectiveness of the organizational performance requires specialize human resources. Since, it allows management of the organization to plan, organize, lead and control the operational process in an effective way. I also have able to gain knowledge about the difference between effectiveness and efficiency. This will help me to improve the organizational performances even when it is facing complex operational challenges at the workplace. Looking around at daily life, the pattern of computer oriented devices make life easier. All of the computerized facets in our society help to increase our daily productivity and help us to do whatever it is we need to accomplish in the day. The computer age is upon the people and it will continue to grow in influence until society revolves around it daily. In personal computers, the industry has begun to create faster machines that can store much more information. A computer is a device that computes, especially a programmable electronic machine that performs high-speed mathematical or logical operations or that assembles, stores, correlates, or otherwise processes information. The particular sequence of operations can be change readily, allowing the computer to solve more than one kind of problem. The interface between the computer and human operator is known as the user interface. [MIFF2009] The internet in simple terms is a network of the interlinked computer networking worldwide, which is accessible to the general public. We will write a custom essay sample on Sample Thesis or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page These interconnected computers work by transmitting data through a special type of packet switching which is known as the IP or the internet protocol. [YOUR2013] Internet is such a huge network of several different interlinked networks relating to the business, government, academic, and even smaller domestic networks, therefore internet is known as the network of all the other networks. These networks enable the internet to be used for various important functions which include the several means of communications like the file transfer, the online chat and even the sharing of the documents and web sites on the WWW, or the World Wide Web. Website is a set of interconnected web pages, usually including a homepage, generally located on the same server, and prepared and maintained as a collection of information by a person, group, or organization. [MIFF2009] Information systems are implemented within an organization for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of that organization. Capabilities of the information system and characteristics of the organizations, its work systems, people development and implementation methodologies determine the extent to which that purpose is achieved. With the use of Online Information System for Sta. Maria Fire Station, people will be able to understand the importance of knowing what the possibilities are might happen due to their carelessness when it comes to their safety. Also, the website will view the offered services so that the people don’t need to visit the main station to inquire but simply use the internet to see all the information about the fire incidents, preventive tips and safety measures of the fire station. 1. 1 Statement of the Problem General Problem: How will the proponents develop an Online Information System for Sta. Maria Fire Station that will motivate people more on efficient information about fire prevention and safety animation tips and tutorials Specific Problems: How will the proponents create a user- friendly interface which the user can easily understand. This becomes a problem if the person who is not computer literate, they have a hard time to understand and navigate the system. Unpleasant web design may cause unintentional mistakes and miss out the interests of the user. How will the proponents create a page that will secure unauthorized person to access important information. Due to manual process of the Sta. Maria Fire Station, important documents were not organized and only stored in computer , Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ filling cabinet, and even in wall shelves without any security causing the data to be access by unauthorized persons that can alter and easily destroy files. How will the proponents create appropriate animations, tutorials, and other multimedia elements for the proposed system. The fire station is conducting few events including seminars and still using the traditional ways of giving instructions that eventually may cause the people to get bored and at the same time, that the topics discussed on these events may be easily slip one’s mind. How will the proponents create a page that will post and update all activities of the Fire Station. Posting and updating the schedule of activities in a bulletin board is very risky due to its tendency to be destroyed unintentionally. Because of lacking of more space, previous announcements are being removed to create new one. And using materials and creating posters are time consuming and money wasting. How will the proponents create a page that will enable the user to send their comments and suggestions to the fire station Due to tradition process, the residents of Sta. Maria are having a hard time in getting information of the fire station. The residents also not informed if there is an announcement, activities or even seminars. 1. 2 Current State of the Technology Computers nowadays are widely spread to industries and businesses. People use it to make their work easier, faster and more accurate that reduces problems and errors. Many companies have already using the computerized and online system that is now making big roles in socializing people and distributing information. Creating websites or online systems expands the process of sharing, receiving and publishing information in a very quick and real – time manner. Information system is also an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, and processing data and for delivering information, knowledge, and digital products. Sta. Maria Fire Station is located at Poblacion, Sta. Maria, Bulacan. Before, both the police and fire station belongs in the same department. But since 1991, the fire station became separated and established causes to lose some important files. In the current system, the fire station is still using the manual process and accumulates several difficulties. SMFS announcements are posted only in bulletin board where pares and push pins are the tolls in posting updates and activities. Posting of events are made after the activity. Log books and other important documents are stored in filling cabinets and bookshelves indie and outside of the fire station’s office. Therefore, the materials have the tendency to be easily destroyed and fade as time passes by. The commonly problem of the establishment other than the lack of equipment is communicating and sharing information to people. SMFS owned 2 functional computers with internet connection and are used for making monthly reports and seminar’s presentation. The BFP requires different structures such as barangays, schools, hospitals and buildings to conduct seminars and inspections that are made through request. They also make inspection on submitted business permits. BFP requires conducting seminars so that the residents of Sta. Maria know how simple preventions will help and what they are going to do during incidents. They are only using projectors, LCD, Power Point Presentation, white board and marker. Presently, instead of 21, the fire station only have 18 firemen , composed of 10 Uniformed Personnel and 8 Non Uniformed Personnel (5Nurses assigned in fire aid and 3 volunteers). Uniformed Personnel are trained by the BFP (Bureau of Fire Protection). Sta. Maria Fire Station Vision A modern, efficient and responsive national fire protection agency working towards a public safety conscious society. Maria Fire Station Mission To protect lives and properties through the prevention and suppression of destructive fires; investigation of their causes and the provision of emergency medical and rescue services with the active support of the public. General Objectives To be able to create an Online Information System for Sta. Maria Fire Station that will give efficient information and safety animation tips and tutorials on fire preventing 1. 3. 2 Specific Objectives To be able to create a user friendly interface which the user can easily understand. The proponents will create a user friendly interface that can be used by anyone even if the users have no deep knowledge on it. This kind of interface can be immediately understood especially for the SMFS user/s and the usage of the system can be learned quickly. Simultaneously, it guides the user through the critical path. To be able to create a page that will secure unauthorized persons to access the proposed system. The proposed system will be having a tight security in keeping the files by creating a log-in page both for the page visitors and admin that contains username and password so that only the authorized person can access the system. Where, only the admin of the website can see all the fire station’s important information while page visitors have limited access on the SMFS’s web page. To be able to create the appropriate animations, tutorials, and other multimedia elements for the proposed system. Incorporating animations in fire safety and prevention tips, fire mitigation and some multimedia elements to the proposed system that the SMFS can use to different events, especially in conducting seminars, will encourage the user/s to easily understand and remember the instruction and information regarding fire preventing. To be able to create a page that will post and update all activities of the Fire Station. The proponents will create a page that can update and post information regarding the events and activities of SMFS so that the people of Sta. Maria will be updated. And also will take less effort, time, and money in creating and posting announcements on the bulletin board. To be able to create a page that will enable the user to send their comments and suggestions to the fire station This will help the fire station in communicating with the residents of Sta. Maria. And also this will help the residents of Sta. Maria to deliver their personal concerns and in getting reliable information when they needed. Maria Fire Station. The proposed system aims to help the SMFS in sharing, communicating, spreading information that will attract the interest of all the possible users. It helps to view important information and awareness about fire incidents from the fire station. PhpMyAdmin or SQL Server The proponent will use PhpMyAdmin or SQL Server as database that will hold and store all information needed in the system. The proponents will store different incidents of Sta. Maria. They will also store all opinions and suggestions that the user post and other information to maintain the content of the server (Back-End) of the system. Adobe Dreamweaver The system will use Adobe Dreamweaver which is the industry-leading web authoring and editing software that provides both visual and code-level capabilities for creating standard-based websites. In graphics editing and designing the proponents will use Adobe Photoshop. PHP scripting language The proponents will use PHP scripting language. It is a general-purpose server-side scripting language originally designed for web development to produce dynamic web pages. It is among one of the most developed server-side scripting languages that is embedded into HTML source document, rather than calling an external file to process data. Ultimately, the code is interpreted by a web server with a PHP server module which generates the resulting web page. It evolved to include a command-line interface capability and can be used in standalone graphical application. Adobe Photoshop The developers also decided to use Adobe Photoshop to design the interface of the front end and back end, including the background and buttons. Front End –the online part of the system that the visitors can see. This is also the user interface and contains all the information needed. The proponents used Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dream Weaver, and PHP to enhance the front end of the system containing the Log-in, Home, Media, News and Events, Community, Contact Us, and About Us. Log-in (officers and administrator) –the part of the system that handles the authentication of the officers and administrator. The officers and administrator should enter the username and password to access the Back End of the website. Contact Us Maintenance – back-end page of the system that the admin can update the contact details of Sta. Maria Fire Station. About Us Maintenance – this page will enable the admin to update the officials of the fire station. Limitation: The proponent will develop an Online Information System exclusively for Sta. Maria Fire Station. The system excludes the sending of online emergency calls/message. In addition, past records of incidents and other confidential files are not included in the system. The scarcity of firemen and fire fighting equipments will not be covered by the system. The further information regarding the inspection of business permit held by the system’s beneficiary will not be covered. The system can only be use by the administrator of SMFS. The created system will not be responsible by the proponents if the system was being hacked and manipulated by unauthorized person. Sample thesis free essay sample Introduction Developing games on Android has its pros and cons. First, Android games are developed in Java, but Android is not a complete Java implementation. Many of the packages used for OpenGL and other graphic embellishments are included in the Android software development kit (SDK). Many does not mean all though, and some very helpful packages for game developers, especially 3-D game developers, are not included. Not every package that may have relied on to build past games will be available in Android. [JFDM 2011] The proposed game is entitled: School Rush is a type of running platform game with Pilipino culture style of interface. The feature of School Rush is play thru level by level, gaining power-ups and answering different kind of questions. The power-ups of the game are based on Pilipino heroes’ powers. It can be gain through the levels of the game. The game play of School Rush is to pass all levels of the game thru the obstacles of every level. Eastern Europe, India, Korea, and China are leading the way; however, countries like the Philippines seem to be slowly catching up. Entire game development processes, including art production, programming, and testing, are now being outsourced to local game studios by top publishers such as EA, Activision, Sony, THQ, and many more. In addition, more and more IPs (intellectual properties) are now being deployed by local studios and indie developers. According in the above statement, the Philippines has slow catch ups in global game production in a several years. And because of that Philippines are now being outsourced to local game studios by top publishers in the world. As stated in www. investphilippines. gov. ph/downloads/sector/Game Development, Game Development is alternately called Interactive Entertainment or Digital Entertainment in other countries. It is basically â€Å"Software Development for Entertainment†. The industry involves the production of original computer games for entertainment purposes, or services such as software programming, 2D and 3D artwork, creation of interactive simulations of real-life situations, and interactive learning materials. Game development also includes the rapidly growing and hugely popular online gaming or massively multiplayer online games(MMOG). The proponents proposed system entitled School Rush, is a 3D game, that not just like an ordinary game for entertainment but also have a educational purpose. School Rush came from the ideas combined by the brainstorming of the proponents, and by the use of Multimedia, game interfaces can be more so exciting while developing it. 2. 4. 2 Foreign Literature According to Zechner Green. (2011). â€Å"Beginning Android 4 Game Development†. page1. State that: This game development renewed our interest, and we started investigating which mobile platforms would be suitable for our development needs. Apples iOS seemed like a good candidate for our game coding skills. However, we quickly realized that the system was not open, that we’d be able to share our work with others only if Apple allowed it, and we’d need a Mac in order to develop for the iOS. And then we found Android. In relation to the study, games is implemented because of the development needs, so in this generation Android and iOS have been more interesting for game development. Creating an Android Game is not easy to do, but because of the use of Modern Technologies and softwares, proponents decided to come up with this kind of system to enhance their skills in programming and to adapt new things like this game development. As stated in a book of Zechner Green(2011). â€Å"Beginning Android 4 Games Development†. Android features have: An application framework that provides a rich set of APIs for creating various types of applications. It also allows the reuse and replacement of components provided by the platform and third-party applications. The Dalvik virtual machine, which is responsible for running applications on Android. A set of graphics libraries for 2D and 3D programming Media support for common audio, video, and image formats, such as Ogg Vorbis, MP3, MPEG-4, and PNG. There’s even a specialized API for playing back sound effects, which will come in handy in your game development adventures. APIs for accessing peripherals such as the camera, Global Positioning System (GPS), compass, accelerometer, touchscreen, trackball, keyboard, controller, and joystick. Note that not all Android devices have all these peripherals—hardware fragmentation in action. According in the statement above, Android possesses features with a high-level view. These are the features that game should have. Chapter 3. 0 Methodology Methodology is the systematic, theoretical analysis of the methods applied to a field of study, or the theoretical analysis of the body of methods and principles associated with a branch of knowledge. It, typically, encompasses concepts such as paradigm, theoretical model, phases and quantitive or qualitive techniques. 3. 1 Project Design 3. 1. 1The Game 3. 1. 1. 1Game Menu Chart Figure 8: Game HIPO This figure shows the Game HIPO. 3. 1. 1. 2 Game Architecture Figure 9: Game Architecture This figure shows the Game Architecture. The Leonard Peltier Story is a film about the federal case of Leonard Peltier being convicted of killing two FBI agents. The beginning of the whole saga came to life when the FBI agents wrongly accused and tried to arrest Peltier and two others for stealing a pair of boots. Incidentally, arresting someone for a local crime was out of the FBI’s jurisdiction. Eventually, a car chase ensued and shooting followed. When the chase came to a halt, Leonard Peltier and others were on one side of a farm shooting at the federal agents. The agents were killed at po...

International Trade and Globalisation - Essay Example Overall levels of trade barriers have declined in recent decades, largely due to international negotiations (Reinert 2012). 11 This paper labors to discuss the concept of international trade among trading countries and how such countries benefit from the Principle of absolute advantage and comparative advantage, intra-industry which arises when the country simultaneously imports and exports similar types of goods or services has also been highlighted. A detailed discussion of the trade policy analysis has been shown in this paper mainly on the impact of imposing and removal of trade tariffs on the welfare of producer, consumer, and the government, who benefits and who loses. International trade is a term used to refer to the exchange of goods and services among the countries of the world (Reinert 2012, P. 30). International trade does not only involve exchange of goods such as steel, automobiles among others it also include exchange of services for example financial services, and engineering services among other services. International trade in goods and services is playing contributes a lot in development of the world economy. International trade is one of the four realms of the world economies the other three include international production, international finance, and international development (Reinert 2012, p 30). Adoloscence and substance abuse Essay Example for Free

Adoloscence and substance abuse Essay Adolescence is a critical period in human development. It is the period during which individuals undergo biological, psychological and social transformations, as they become adults. These transformations occur simultaneously and without conscious awareness by youth going through these changes. Any transformation an adolescent goes through may have an impact on the introduction and progression of teenage substance use. Substance abuse is drug abuse. Most substance abusers globally are the adolescents. This is because their developmental stage is vulnerable to anything. The brain development of an adolescent is not fully developed. A teenager may physically resemble an adult but still lack the brain maturation to think like one. To expect adolescents to make adult like decisions in regard to substance use is an unlikely expectation for most teenagers. Adolescence is defined as those behavioral changes that take place between childhood and maturity or adulthood. It is the changing period from childhood to adulthood. Adolescence is viewed as a time where biological, psychological and social transitions take place. It is the most critical stage of human development. During adolescence, different behavior patterns become more frequent (Cobb, 2006). These behavioral trends include risk- taking behaviors, conflicts between the adolescence peers and parents and greater social development. Every individual adapts to their behavior depending on how they were brought up, their social interactions and adult influences. The physical development of adolescence is known as puberty. It is the stage a person is able to reproduce (Cobb, 2006). Adolescence Physical development is all about the body changes. It involves genital growth, changes in body odor. Voice changes, growth of pubic hair, breast development and menstruation in female. The psychosocial development of adolescence is complicated. It involves hormones, love interests and intellectual pursuits. All this complicates adolescence development. In this development, stress, depression, lack of sleep, and anxiety are common among teenagers (Johnston et al, 2006). It is during this psychosocial development that adolescent teenagers are at risk of bad behavior. This development mostly involves intellectual pursuits and social interactions. Adolescents’ brains are usually not fully developed. This plays a major role in immature emotional and cognitive development. It is during adolescence that teenagers adapt easily to different behaviors. How bad and well the behavior is depended on how an individual was brought up and the social interactions. Many risky behaviors such as substance abuse start at the adolescent stage of human development. Adolescence is also a time when young individuals take risks that can have a long time effects on their health and well being. Substance abuse is the misuse of drugs. Most adolescents are prone to drugs and substance abuse. This is because the adolescent brains are not fully developed, and this plays a role in the decisions they make. Immature brain sections may place teenagers at prominent risk to the effects of drugs. Misuse of drugs or substance abuse is mostly associated with the adolescents. Globally, it is estimated through research that five billion people who abuse or use substances are the adolescent (Johnston et al, 2006). Adolescence is a period of significant personal development. It is in this adolescent stage that teenagers are let to make their own decisions. They choose their friends and how they want to live their life. It is during this stage that they can adapt easily to certain behaviors due to influences. It is said that adolescence is the time of testing and novelty seeking. Curiosity on drugs is one way that makes young people abuse substances. Millions of young people try an illicit drug at least once during their adolescent years. The most common substance abuse among adolescents is alcohol and tobacco. Most of the teenagers will have tried either of the two or both. It is estimated that twelve years is the average age of children to take their first alcoholic drink. Nearly 20 percent of twelve to twenty year old is considered to be binge drinkers (Cobb, 2006). Tobacco smoking is also prone to adolescents. Most smokers globally start at their teenage years hence become addicted. It is said that teens are more vulnerable to addiction and receptive to nicotine than are those who start to smoke as adults. Causes of adolescence substance use vary. Peer selection processes, peer influences and cognitive biases play a major role in adolescents substance use. Parental influences also play a role in adolescence substance use. How the adolescent is raised and how the parents behave with them is important to their development. The parent teenage relationship plays major roles in adolescent substance use. Substance abuse has its effects to an individual. Adolescents who use substances frequently are at risk for healthy problems. Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs have certain effects that can cause mental and heath problems. Substance abuse adolescents are at a high risk for various issues that may disrupt with their development. The physical, psychological and social effects of adolescent substance or drug abuse can have lasting consequences for the individual. This may interfere with a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. On-going adolescent substance abuse can make an individual be at a greater risk for addiction in adulthood (Cobb, 2006). The physical consequences of adolescent substance abuse affect an individual physical development. Physical injuries and illnesses occur as a result of drug related accidents and overdoses. The psychological consequences of adolescent substance abuse affect an individual psychological development. Psychological development is all about the brain. The Misuse and overdose of substances leads to mental health problems. Alcohol is one substance that affects an individual psychological development (Cobb, 2006). Tobacco misuse can lead to illnesses such as lung cancer. Other problems may also arise due to tobacco smoking. These illnesses caused by substance abuse can also lead to death. Prolonged substance abuse can cause depression an anxiety, which can disrupt an adolescent ability to function and develop in a productive manner. There are also social consequences due to adolescent substance abuse. Adolescents who frequently abuse substances are more likely to have issues with their social development. Most of them tend to isolate themselves from family and friends. They are also more likely to have troubles with the law and law enforcers. Due to this, the adolescent substance abuser can bring problems within the family. Adolescence is a critical stage. Parents, teachers and any other adult should be role models for healthy behaviors. This is because adolescents adapt certain behavior from their peers and adults. Substance abuse affects adolescents mostly, and this can be avoided if the child to adolescent development is proper. Substance abuse causes major risks to adolescence development. Due to this, it is important for adolescents to be taught good behavior and be corrected when they wrong. Parents, teachers or other adults are people who should play major roles in teenagers’ life. They are a great influence in adolescents hence should be well role models. References Cobb, N. (2006). Educational Philosophy :: Education Teaching Teachers Essays

Educational Philosophy In our society today, the demand for teachers is starting to increase. But today it's not only how good an education you have, but how you are going to conduct yourself and your classroom. The act of teaching has almost become an art these days, as to how you control your room to how you arrange the seats to how you decorate the bulletin boards. I will be talking about each of these topics and addressing my views and thoughts about each of them throughout this paper. By the end of this paper my views of teaching and ideas about my classroom should be apparent and ready for improvement for the day that will occur in the future. 1. I feel some of the most important people in our society today are our educators. Without teachers who would be there to influence and teach our future leaders. I think that in becoming an educator it is a responsibility like none other. You are in charge of a classroom full of kids that are ready to learn and it's completely up to you to teach them. I feel and think that I want to be an educator because I want to teach children about things they never knew about before. I want to influence and encourage children to be all that they can be. I think that each child has a spark inside of them and it's the responsibility of the teacher to ignite the spark into a flame and encourage them to do all that they can and much more. I think that teachers deserve the millions of dollars instead of the pro athletes because they do so much more for our society and for our future. 2. As you walk into my classroom, you will notice lots of work up on the walls. The seats will be in a circle with my desk up front included in the circle. I will have the seats like that to make sure we are in unity and everyone is in the class discussion and nobody is in the back being left out. Referring back to the papers on the walls, I will have numerous bulletin boards for all of the subjects, so that if one student excels in one subject but others excel in other subjects, everyone will have a paper up on the wall for recognition of good work in a subject.

An Investigation of Vibrio Cholera

I chose to investigate Vibrio cholerae from the genus Vibrio because I found that V. cholerae was a very interesting bacteria. According to our textbook, (Prescott's Principles of Microbiology by Willey Joanne, Woolverton Chris, Sherwood Linda), V. cholerae has caused seven pandemics in various parts of the world, especially Asia, the Middle East and Africa. According to the 2009 Cholera annual report from the World Health Organization, (Weekly Epidemiological Record, 2010, 85(31):293-308), the US experienced less than 20 cases while around the world 45 countries experienced 221226 cases including 4946 deaths. In 1883 Robert Koch, who is considered by our text and many others to be one of the founders of microbiology identified the Vibrio bacterium that caused cholera. Koch believed that the key to prevention was to improve hygiene and in sanitary drinking water. This is the reason that there are so few cases in the United States per year, because we have a high degree of sanitary drinking water throughout the United States. Our textbook describes its taxonomy as being one of many serogroups, the textbook identifies V. cholerae O1 and 0139 to be one of two serogroups that cause epidemics. V. cholerae O1 also has two sterotypes and two biotypes. In 1992, the new strain, 0139 was discovered in Asia, but for the first time in recorded history, the 0139 strain actually displaced the 01 serogroup in India. Some of the genus Vibrio characteristics are that they are capable of fermentative and oxidative metabolism. According to Bergey’s Manual, they are related to enteric bacteria and Pseudomonadaceae and they are considered to be â€Å"Facultatively Anaerobic Gram-negative Rods† and on the level with the Family Enterobacteriaceae. Read Chapter 8 Microbial Genetics Vibrios are distinguished from enterics by being oxidase-positive and motile by means of polar flagella. V. cholerae as infectious bacteria, have the same goals as any other organism, to invade and infect the hose, to replicate and to transfer to another host. There are only a few ways that V. cholerae invade the human body. First, according to our text, it is transmitted through contaminated water that has been contaminated with fecal material containing V. cholerae from infected individuals. Such an outbreak is occurring right now in Haiti. The source of the contamination can be from other cholera sufferer’s untreated diarrheal discharge into waterways or into groundwater or drinking water supplies. Because of the earthquake that occurred in Haiti the sanitary conditions of the water is probably the main source of transmission. A second way for transmission of V. cholerae to individuals is through contaminated food, either from fecal matter on the food from an infected individual or perhaps an infected individual that does not have good hygiene handling food and infecting others. The third way that an individual can be exposed to V. cholerae, is through eating raw improperly cooked shellfish that were harvested in fecal-polluted coastal waters or even from shellfish that were harvested from non fecal-polluted waters and either undercooked or re-contaminated after cooking. In the United States this is usually how individuals are infected, this is because V. cholera is one of the most common bacteria found in surface waters. Strains have been found in marine coastal areas and in warmer estuaries in the United States. According to the FDA, â€Å"The Bad Bug Book†, (www. fda. gov/Food/FoodSafety/FoodborneIllness/FoodborneIllnessFoodbornePathogensNaturalToxins/BadBugBook/default. htm). Once an individual has been infected and the bacteria is now inside the host, it has to survive the upper GI tract, which usually is very good at defending against invasion. Unfortunately for the host, cholera can grow very well in a high salt and low pH environment. The bacterial incubation period is usually from 12 to 72 hours. When the bacteria get past the upper GI tract, they avoid the immune system by using their polysaccharide capsule which makes phagocytosis by the host immune system very difficult and will allow the bacteria to continue to replicate. It colonizes the small intestine The bacteria are not harmed by the strong stomach acid of the infected individual because of the polysaccharide capsule and attach themselves to the intestinal wall of the small intestine. They secrete a cholera toxin, called choleragen. The bacteria are not invasive and the toxin that is secreted enters the intestinal epithelial cells, adding an ADP-ribosyl group, like pertussis toxin does which activated the enzyme adenylate cyclase which triggers the hypersectretion of water and choride ions and preventing sodium ions from being absorbed. The results are that the infected individual starts to lose large amounts of fluids, through vomiting, and a high amount of watery diarrhea. The individual will have painful stomach cramps and nausea and may lose up to 10 to 15 litres of fluid during the course of the infection. The large amounts of fluid loss, is usually referred to as â€Å"rice-water,† and the diarrhea fluid contaminates water used by other individuals causing others to be infected as well. The amount of fluid loss that the individual loses can be large enough that the individual may have high levels of blood proteins and can lead to death from circulatory shock. In the intestinal tract V. cholerae can stimulate bacterial genes that can increase infectivity of subsequent hosts. The process is not well known, but the stimulated genes prepare the bacteria to be better, more infective colonizers in subsequent hosts. his process may be integral to fueling future epidemics. According to a paper published in Proc Natl Acad Sci USA in September 2006, that V. cholera cells will adjust to the host they invaded. They will â€Å"rearrange their transcriptional profile†, to adjust to the human host from the aquatic environment. It’s ability to infect and multiply within a host re gardless of the range of environmental conditions. In studies on bacterial pathogenesis, virulence genes are usually the focus which is essential for pathogenesis. The findings of this paper showed that the repression of MSHA pilus production suggested that not only is it critical for colonization but is also critical to the role in bacterial pathogenesis. It appears from the article that MSHA repression is critical in the early stages of the infection, to evade the host’s innate immune response. so when you think of V. cholera it is a very successful human pathogen because of transcriptional regulation and using a set of wide responses that are flexible so that the bacteria can respond to a wide ranging environment.

Drug Addiction Argumentative Essay - 977 Words

Natalee Sweet Comp. #1 Mr. Yates 7-22-2012 Argumentative Essay: Addiction is a choice Alcohol and illicit drug consumption are all too prevalent today in high schools, colleges, and all across the globe. Students seeking to fit in or forget about the repetitiveness of school and homework have a tendency to experiment. Drug addiction is known by the scientific community to be a psychological condition based on excessive, obsessive, and compulsive actions. Once that regular user crosses the line into addiction their only concern is their self and their life revolves around the getting, using, and finding ways and means to get and use more. Most people start using drugs and alcohol occasionally, which is a voluntary decision,†¦show more content†¦At this point, drug use does not raise dopamine levels or produce a â€Å"high†; instead, the user keeps taking the drug to stave off painful withdrawal symptoms. Addiction is a choice and by classifying addiction as a disease, we are just enabling drug addicts to t ake no responsibility for their own actions in their lives. By labeling addiction as a medical condition it creates a false assumption that addicts have no control over their own behavior. People become addicts because of their behavior, not their brain chemistry. The disease concept is so popular because it gives people an easy way out; if they inherited their addiction they can’t be responsible for their own behavior. The disease model of addiction is flawed for a number of reasons; first, most people who take drugs do not become addicted, but may take drugs for a period of time, then stop when they choose to do so. Many well respected professors and scientist claim addiction is a scapegoat behavior that has been incorrectly identified as a physical or mental illness, an addict is only a victim of bad science and misguided policy. No one would choose to wake up sick every day, having to worry about how they are going to get their next fix just to feel normal.
